The telephone interview is on the way out and, as you can see, Debbie Harry is not best pleased! Unfortunately, she does not have much influence in the world of graduate recruitment. To quote her directly:
‘Oh why cant we talk again, Oh why cant we talk again, Oh why cant we talk again. Don’t leave me hanging on the telephone’
Calm down Debbie, you are repeating yourself!
“Debbie, we called you for your prearranged telephone interview last week and it went straight through to answer machine and wasted so much of our time. Instead, now we will do a video interview. You can still talk but it will be filmed and I (the Graduate Recruiter) will review your answers at a time that suits me.”
A few years ago, video interviewing was used by just a few forward thinking employers and was an innovative new technology for their graduate recruitment teams. Fast forward to 2016 and video interviews have replaced telephone interviews in a huge amount of placement and graduate job application processes. The Association of Graduate Recruiters reported in September 2015 that the use of video interviews had tripled in two years!
I am only too aware that this new assessment process is met with a significant amount of trepidation by students. And the trepidation is justified: I have reviewed hundreds of video interviews and it is clear that many candidates are unprepared and ill at ease selling themselves to a webcam. To remedy this many of our university clients are looking at investing heavily in software to help their students prepare for this process. There are some excellent providers out there but the costs can be prohibitive, particularly if you are seeking to trial the use of video interviews in specific modules or career development sessions.
