My route to Gradconsult has been somewhat unconventional, but at the same time, wonderful. I left the University of Sheffield with a law degree, knowing I wanted to come back to the Steel City to work. I applied for, and was successful with, a job at a local small business, only to have the position pulled a week or so before I was due to start. Despite my disappointment, I decided to go to the business induction day, even though I no longer had a business to be inducted into! I went with the low expectation of networking with a few people, and came away with an invitation to interview for Gradconsult. I was obviously delighted, and attended the interview a few days later feeling very grateful and excited.
The interview process was refreshingly honest, and after two hours of me waffling on, I left extremely hopeful that I could land a job at such an exciting, ambitious company. I immediately got on the phone to my Mum, and explained to her the wonderous, ground-breaking concept of giving an honest account of yourself at interview! I must have said something right, because after a few days, I was ecstatic to hear I had secured a position, and would be starting as a project coordinator within two weeks.
During my first few weeks I’ve been working on a variety of tasks, and am embracing the coordinator role. I’ve been fortunate to gain exposure to lots of different elements of the business already. From sourcing the exact colour of purple for the new meeting room door (Pamplona purple 3 in case you wondered!) to helping with the company’s social media channels, no two days are the same, and I’m thoroughly enjoying experiencing the multitude of tasks involved in running a small business.
An additional benefit of working as part of a smaller team is that, despite only being here a matter of weeks, I’m already gaining more responsibility for more long-term projects, such as the Small Graduate Recruiters’ Club. I attended our first SGRC conference before my first day (which you can find the blog for here), and have been working on our upcoming South West event (you can find the eventbrite link here). Plugging aside, I’m really looking forward to continuing to learn more about the business and our clients, and working with the team at GC Towers to help in any way I can.
Having now been here nearly a month, I feel very settled in, and am delighted to find myself surrounded by some wonderful people. While the office environment has taken a bit of getting used to (being the only boy has sometimes proved challenging and eye-opening), I am thrilled to be here, and am looking forward to the future.
